The NEW Seven Deadly Sins?
My original idea for today was going to be a short rant about politics in the US where I was going to very skillfully and wittily make fun of both liberals and conservatives. Then I saw this on the news and my agenda changed. The Vatican has released a new and revised version of the seven deadly sins which have been around for 1,400 years. The old seven deadly sins (Pride, Envy, Gluttony, Lust, Anger, Greed and Sloth) have been replaced by seven new mortal sins: polluting, genetic engineering, being obscenely rich, drug dealing, abortion, pedophilia and causing social injustice. Now... I'm going to state right here that this is not an attack on anyone's religion. I have absolutely zero problems with the Catholic church and they are free to do as they please. That out of the way... seriously? To be fair, the old list was archaic but there wasn't really that much to be subjective about. Gluttony... don't overeat. That's fairly straight forward. Wraith... don't kill anyone. Ok, also fairly straight forward. Lust, Pride and Envy were a little harder to prove and justify but still, you can see a general idea there even if it was a little fuzzy on the details. The NEW (yes, I'm having fun writing that in capitals) seven deadly sins though... pollution? So if I drop a cigarette butt outside that's a mortal sin that will send me to hell? A little extreme but ok. Some of these though are really hard to understand on a daily scale. I admit that everything on the list of NEW sins are issues and problems in our world that need to be stopped but do we really want to tell someone that they're going to hell because they made too much money? Where do I sign to avoid getting put into THAT tax bracket?!? I hate being poor as much as anyone but I certainly can't imagine that I'm going to feel better about being poor by telling myself 'At least if I get hit by a bus today that's one less reason why I'm not going to hell.' Drug dealing and abortion I'm going to stay away from entirely. I think the primary issue that I have with this list is that so much of it isn't aimed at the general populace. Really... how many of us everyday people are going to be in a position where we can revolutionize medicine and science by creating a morally questionable procedure? I'm willing to bet that the number of people the world who have that chance are going to be roughly the same amount of people who are reading this. Pedophilia... how many parishes have gone out of business for this very sin? Really, does the Catholic church have any credibility left to talk about this? Here's another question for you... with the advent of the NEW seven deadly sins, does that mean the old list has been retired or does the general populace now have to avoid 14 deadly sins?
